Story

The 2005 Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup received $35,000 from Hosting BC. Athletes from 25 nations competed, including boarders from Slovakia, Chile, Finland and Brazil and five Canadian provinces. There were 110 volunteers at the free event, which drew approximately 80,000 spectators over five days of competition.

The event created a world-class half-pipe venue that the national and development teams can use for training. The pool of volunteers trained for this event can serve at future competitions and will play a significant role in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Economic spin-off included more than 400 participants and 80 media spending at local hotels, restaurants and businesses. Organizers purchased goods and services regionally with the event budget of $750,000. Widespread media coverage offered excellent marketing exposure for the local area.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
