Story
The 2006 Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event attracted 24 athletes, aged 20-50, from B.C., Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan, who competed in front of 120 spectators.
Increased economic activity was generated through accessing local services such as physiotherapy, using local suppliers for event contracts and local spending on goods and services by participants, spectators and volunteers. The event enabled additional training for officials, coaches and volunteers, making them qualified to serve at future high-level games. Media coverage helped raise awareness of athletes with disabilities leading to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
