Story
The 2005 Victoria International Track Classic received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event drew 140 athletes from 10 countries, including Trinidad, Libya and Ireland, with seven Canadian provinces represented. Participants competed in front of 3,500 spectators.
The financial legacy of the event allowed organizers to have significant funding in place for the 2006 event. Economic impact included increased local hotel bookings and purchase of services and products from local businesses. The 100 volunteers now have international level experience that can support future events. Organizers also plan to establish a small annual scholarship fund to encourage promising new student athletes to remain in Canada to train while attending university.
