Story

The 2006 Homesense Skate Canada International Figure Skating Competition received $25,000 from Hosting BC. There were 66 athletes from 16 countries competing in the event, with some skaters coming from as far away as Bulgaria, Turkey, and China. The four-day event drew almost 20,000 spectators to the Victoria venue with an estimated 2.4 million fans around the world watching the competition on television

A pool of 220 volunteers was trained for the event and will be able to serve at future competitions. Also, equipment purchased for the event, such as media and judges' platforms, can be used by other event organizers. Economic spin-off included more than 1,500 room nights booked as well as visitor spending on local services and amenities during an off-peak period. Recognition of community facilities as world-class will serve to attract future world-class events.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
