Story
The 2008 Bear Mountain Arena Curling Classic received $10,000 from HostingBC. The event drew 120 athletes, aged 19-50, from seven provinces. There were 4,000 spectators and 100 volunteer supported the event.
Direct economic impact included increased revenue for the local hospitality industry and goods and services suppliers during an otherwise slow time of year. Officials, volunteers and local ice technicians upgraded their skills to form an experienced resource pool for future events. Event legacies include contribution to local charities – more than $30,000 in three years. A junior curling clinic allowed local schoolchildren an opportunity to train with elite athletes, increasing motivation for students to pursue the sport.
