Story
The 2005 World Cup Fencing Competition received $35,000 from Hosting BC. The event attracted 214 athletes from 22 countries, including Venezuela, Serbia and Montenegro, Egypt and Israel and there were fencers from eight Canadian provinces. Participants competed in front of 950 spectators and the event was supported by 130 volunteers.
Equipment purchased for the World Cup will be used in regional youth tournaments and other games and will improve B.C.'s capacity to host national events. The event included a series of training clinics to regional instructors and coaches as well as training for volunteers, who ranged in age from five to 95. Skills learned can be used in future events. Economic benefits included increased business for the hotel, transportation and food and beverage industries as well as organizer purchases with local suppliers.
