Story
The 2006 Four Weapon International Fencing World Cup received $35,000 from Hosting BC. The event attracted 353 athletes, aged 16-60, who competed in front of 800 spectators. Fencers came from 29 countries, including Nigeria, Thailand, Israel, and Argentina as well as from eight Canadian provinces.
Direct economic impact included local suppliers for all event contracts, and participant and spectator spending in local hotels, restaurants and other businesses. The Peter Bakonyi Legacy Fund associated with the event provides donations to local charities and is also used for junior player development programs. There were 100 volunteers trained for the competition, gaining valuable experience for future games.
