Sooke Measures Up in Accessibility

Sooke received $15,000 from Measuring Up. Funds were used to conduct a community audit and to host an open house, focus groups, workshops, and an accessibility challenge for local community leaders. The community is developing a strategic accessibility plan and has identified 76 recommendations with priorities being accessible parks and municipal facilities as well as a safe pedestrian network. In addition, a portion of funds was used to make a section of sidewalk leading to the post office more accessible.

Measuring Up helps communities assess and improve how accessible and inclusive they are for people with disabilities, seniors and others with similar needs. The program includes a fund, established by the Province of British Columbia, which offers grants to communities to complete accessibility-related projects.
