Penticton Celebrates Spirit of BC Week 2008

The Creative Spirit Mandala, a collective community art project,was launched as part of the celebrations of Spirit of BC Week 2008 in Penticton, one of more than 100 communities to celebrate the Week. Also launched was BookCrossing, a project designed to encourage reading, where donated books are left in public places for the next reader. The books' travels are tracked on the Internet.

Other activities included community skates and swims enjoyed by an estimated 450 residents and a Light Up the Night event where participants walked a five-kilometre route along Lakeshore Drive and the Channel. This family event drew 150 people and included local champions leading the way, entertainment, refreshments, glow sticks, and prizes.

Spirit of BC Week is an annual province-wide celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. Held each February, it is a week of over 300 events and activities showcasing local programs and services that strengthen community arts, literacy, sport, recreation and volunteerism. The celebration is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
