Story

The 2005 Strauss Canada Cup of Curling received $10,000 from Hosting BC to bring the top 10 women's and men's curling teams to the city to try for a spot at the Olympic qualifying event. There were 120 athletes competing, ranging in age from 19 to 50 and coming from eight Canadian provinces.

More than 350 volunteers assisted with the event, which was played in front of 40,000 spectators. Earning significant national media coverage, the Canada Cup raised Kamloops' profile as a sport tourism venue. In addition, at a time of year when hotels and restaurants traditionally experience their low season, the event brought fans, players, TV crews and others to the city to boost the local economy.
