Story

The 2005 National Road Cycling Championships saw more than 1,500 athletes, coaches, officials and managers visit the city for the event, which received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The 466 participants, ranging in age from teens to seniors and representing eight Canadian provinces, competed in front of 3,000 spectators.

There were 12 new officials trained to staff the event, along with 300 volunteers, creating a pool of skilled resources to assist with future races. Kamloops, also known as the Tournament Capital of Canada, took in an estimated $1 million in additional sport tourism business during the Championships. Organizers from Cycling BC created a cycling club to host future events, raising the profile of the sport, which many residents and guests had not witnessed at this high performance level.
