Greater Victoria School District Hosts Explorations Summer Camps

In 2007, with Explorations funding of $20,000, the Greater Victoria School District offered four arts, sport and recreation camps for 69 children, aged 7-10. Five schools participated in the camps which served City of Victoria inner-city neighbourhoods of James Bay, Fernwood, Hillside and Mayfair/Quadra.

Activities included swimming, cricket, hiking, lacrosse and Ultimate Frisbee, as well as the SportFit program. The arts camps involved drama, cartooning, clay work and sculpting. Donated books were distributed in a Great Book Giveaway and campers were encouraged to read daily.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
