Fort St. John, one of more than 100 communities to celebrate Spirit of BC Week 2008, opened the week with a flag raising ceremony followed by a Chocolate Festival. Other festivities included an evening of wine and food tasting with an expert sommelier as well as an Arts Showcase where more than 20 different art groups, representing hundreds of Peace Country artists, displayed their work at the Cultural Centre. The evening also was opening night for Stage North's Complete Works of William Shakespeare.
Sports activities included family swims, a Bantam AAA Hockey Tournament, and a Ladies Curling Bonspiel. A Spirit of Business day featured a networking breakfast where a speaker discussed the role of the business community in developing local athletes. There was also a session at the Legion on the topic of volunteer recruitment and a press conference launching the Community Awards Program. The North Peace Literacy Now Plan was unveiled during Spirit of BC Week and there was a Literacy Olympics involving a spelling bee and several writing contests.
