Story

Denman Island Community School used an Explorations grant of $5,000 to offer a 2005 summer camp for children aged eight to 13. The professionally-run Drama camp Dreams offered a two-week program on Shakespeare, and culminated in a grand performance at the community hall. A mini-camp was also offered each morning for younger participants. Plays included As You Like It, MacBeth, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, offering something for everyone, inlcuding sword-fighting, period dances, and set design. Attendees gained an understanding of the plays' themes, characters, language, the social and historical context, and specific drama techniques.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
