Story

Speed skating was supported with $10,000 from Hosting BC for the 2006 Canada Post Age Class Long Track Championships. There were 113 athletes aged 10-20 involved, representing six provinces and including 34 skaters and eight coaches from B.C. Participants competed in front of 350 spectators.

A timing clock and stop watches purchased for the event will be used for future speed skating competitions and training. Skate officials upgraded their training to participate in the event and to prepare for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The venue received upgrades such as new washrooms, hot water system and tractor/sweeper storage area. Also, the new timing/place judging stations built by local contractors and the Northern Lights carpentry class will be used by other sport groups. It is estimated that in addition to visitor spending, the event contributed $35,000 to local suppliers and service providers.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
