Story
The 2006 Continental Cup of Curling received $25,000 from Hosting BC. The event attracted 60 athletes from eight countries, including Scotland, Germany and Norway and from four Canadian provinces. The four-day event drew 22,000 spectators with an estimated TV audience of 1.3 million.
Economic impact included local spending of the event budget of $800,000 plus participant and spectator spending on local accommodations, meals and other services - all during an off-peak period. Surplus revenues from the event were directed to junior curling development at the Chilliwack Curling Club. Curling officials and 300 volunteers gained the experience of an international event and will be a resource for future high-level competition. National TV coverage offered excellent marketing exposure for the area.
