Residents of Campbell River, one more than 100 communities celebrating Spirit of BC Week 2008, launched festivities with an official Spirit Week 2008 Flag Raising.
A story-writing contest drew 90 entries about the Spirit of BC in Campbell River; the six prize-winning stories were published in the local newspaper. Other activities included a Much Music Video Dance Party for Campbell River youth. Also, the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex hosted a Spirit of BC Week free swim and skate and the Flying Fitness Squad visited seven locations in the community, leading about 80 participants in a winter Olympics themed exercise routine.
In addition, there was a screening of Niiggaanibatowaad: FrontRunners, a film that describes the segregation of Aboriginal athletes, abuse suffered in the residential school system and how survival, hope, and reconciliation can transcend hatred and racism.
